Why go to college

by Alex
(Glendale, CA)

Dear Mom and Dad,
I need to be straight with you. You've given me lots of reasons why I need to go to college, but none of them are about me. They are all about you. I feel you're trying to achieve your own goals through me.

So tell me again, but this time put me in the picture and tell me why I need to go to college.

Alex

Teen Not Considering College - Alex your parents love you
by: Teej

I hope you showed this post to your parents, Alex. It sounds like they just want what's best for you. They may be naming all the reasons you don't want or need to hear, but in the end, it sounds like it really is about you.

And if you totally disagree still and feel that you will make it FINE on your own, I bet if you wrote down a plan of some sort, and showed them what you plan to do to succeed without college, perhaps they might change their minds and support you on your ideas and goals instead.

At the very least, you and your parents could have a compromise, and you try out a small community college for a year, get a certificate in something interesting and useful, and take it from there.

I wish you the best. Our son isn't old enough to think about college yet, but thanks to you, I'll keep in mind to be open to reasons why he may not want to go, and still support and help him decide what's truly best for him, with HIS GOALS in front - college or not.

Again, best wishes, Alex.

P.S. See the left side of this website's navigation bar under the Privacy Policy (and above the RSS box thingie) that says Site Build It?

I can't believe I just saw it, while scanning for new topic pages on parenting. It's exactly what I was thinking about just now when considering your post and our today teens' needs and/or wants.

Our niece is 15 and uses that place to make her own website, which she's learning to earn income from. I wish I could explain more about it, but I'd have to talk to her first, as not to give you the wrong info or anything.

I know her mother and aunt also use that company. She is happy because she never has to look for a summer job, and probably after she graduates she can afford college or.. not go and still succeed. I'm not sure what it is that you want to do, but I know she loves that place (Site Builder It). Anyway, sorry to go on and on, but I thank you for opening our eyes to the college topic.

Again, wishing you the best on your decision with your parents!!
