Teacher Student Sex Abuse

Abused Student
All to often we are hearing in the news about teachers being charged with having a sexual relationship with a student. The numbers are on the upswing all over the country. It seems like a good time to take a look at how we can identify the problem should it happen to one of our kids.
In many cases the sex is consensual, but that still does not make it right, and in most cases it is still illegal. Assuming that is not the case, let's take a look at some of the things students can be aware of.
Sexual predators are known to groom subjects, a process of gaining their trust. Students should be aware of teachers that pay extra attention to them, or show favoritism. Another sign is if the teacher gives the student a personal e-mail address. Phone numbers, gifts or money are also bad signs. Teachers confiding to much personal information about their lives is another common occurrence.
For some reason, one that is unknown, the use of electronic devices is common for teachers having relations with students. The is one area parents might have a little control. They can at least monitor certain devices if they feel there might be a problem. Text messages and e-mails can be checked, as well as myspace and facebook accounts.
The changes in your child that might cause you to be suspicious are sudden changes in behavior, especially in their moods. Sleeping and eating patterns may change. They may become distant from family and friends. Not so common would be signs of physical abuse such as excessive bathing, self-harm, difficulty walking or poor hygiene.
If your child ever tells you they were sexually abused it is advised that you contact the police immediately, even before the school authorities. If you find out the day it happened you should make sure your child does not wash their hands, change their cloths, bathing or even brushing their teeth. Important evidence could be anywhere.
Your input as parents, teachers and students is important to us, and it can greatly help others. If this is a topic you have experience with, please share.
