Teach Students With Autism

Training Teachers To Teach

Arizona State University is launching a program for educators and service providers to train them to teach students with autism.  This will be the first time in Arizona that a master's program focuses on autism.

As of today, autism has no cure.  It is a group of neurobiological-developmental disorders known as autism-spectrum disorders.  Ten years ago, one out of every 10,000 kids had signs of autism.  Today that number is closer to one in every 150.  The group Autism Speaks claims autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the country.  The increase in the numbers of school children with this disorder has brought on the need for teachers specially trained to teach them.

The educational program will not only focus on autism, but also the other disorders that are associated with autism.  Some of these other disorders are attention-deficit disorder, learning disabilities, epilepsy and mental retardation.  In many cases, autism is not a condition that stands alone.  Students will not only be trained in these other related disorders but also in specific types of autism.

This degree program, at ASU, is offered online.  It is a total of 33 credits, offered two at a time, in ten week courses.

Who might benefit from this course, or who should be taking it?  This course is designed to help therapists, nurses, social workers, parents and anyone else in a position to teach students with autism.

Find more information about this course on the ASU website.  ASU.edu   The video below is a very good overview of autism, well worth the couple of minutes it takes to watch it.
