Student Career Path

How soon is to soon to be thinking about a career? I started in the seventh grade doing a report on three different occupations and exactly what it would take to get there. I knew that to be a doctor I would need to take Latin, I also knew I would need good grades, starting from that point on. For that career path the seventh grade was the perfect time to take a serious look at what was to be expected of me.
If college of any kind is key to your child's career goals, they need to learn the importance of good grades. I was taught that good grades were essential for getting accepted into the better colleges. It goes much deeper than that. Financing a college degree can be difficult for many parents and the better you child's grades are the better their chances of getting scholarship and grant money.
It's not just about grades the kids need to be thinking about. I knew as a freshman I needed Latin. Everyone else, except a few geeks, were taking Spanish, French or German. Not me, I had to take a language I would never speak. It wasn't all bad, I loved the teacher and Latin club was a blast.
If law is in your child's future be sure they spend time on the speech and debate team. I would recommend it as a self esteem booster for any child, but lawyers will use these public speaking skill daily in their jobs.
The high school years can all be spent taking classes that will better prepare students for their chosen work later in life. Not just your main subjects but the electives, clubs and extracurricular activities can all be used to better prepare students for college and beyond.
Freshmen should meet with a counselor and go over the students goals. The counselor should be able to guide the student by suggesting different classes and activities the school offers that would be the best use of the students time.
Regardless of your child's career goals, all college bound high school students should put emphasis into these areas.
As you child enters their junior year I recommend looking into college accredited classes. Many high schools offer these, and it just takes good grades to get in. I found out years ago that a college credit in high school is much cheaper than the same credit obtained at a university.
Parents cannot emphasis enough the importance of a student career path for high school to college bound kids. The sooner they chose a career path and learn what it takes to get there, the sooner they will see the value in every thing school has to offer them.
