School Attire
How strict should school attire be? Are uniforms the best solution? Many parents feel uniforms are the best answer, and they have some good points. They eliminate some of the things most parents dislike about the way kids dress. Many of us have problems with short shorts, low cut tank tops, thong underwear and bra straps showing just as a few examples. OK, I have daughters, guys dress a little funny too.
School uniforms create less pressure on the kids and encourages a less cliquey atmosphere. Uniforms are not just for Catholic schools anymore, many schools require some sort of uniform. Montessori schools have believed in this philosophy as well as many charter schools. Many teachers are more comfortable teaching to a classroom full of properly attired students than what other classrooms might generate.
Most schools at least have a dress code. If you are lenient as to what your child can wear it might be best to get a copy of the dress code and go over it. Some schools are strict about logos and printed words on caps and shirts. Others want skirts and shorts a certain length, while others are concerned about under garments showing and low cut tanks.
While there is absolutely no excuse for teachers having sex with students it is happening. You will never know ahead of time which teacher it will be and with which student. Predator teachers are out there and the numbers are rising. Let's not send our daughters to school in a fashion that would tempt them and make our kids a target. That is a real concern with school attire.
While we are talking about teenage daughters, like I do a lot, since that's my expertise, let's consider teenage boys. They need to be listening to the teacher, studying and doing school work, not staring at your daughter. Parents of daughters, do the parents of sons a favor and send the girls to school somewhat covered up. It may not be as much fun for the guys but they just might learn more.
Parents should also be aware that many electronic devices are not allowed at school. While most school allow cell phones, as long as they are turned off, not all do. Learn the rules about iPads, iPods and mp3 players. If they are taken to class and get taken away, well, that's no fun. The kids would then have to do what I did once.
What did I do? OK, it's confession time. In fifth grade we had super balls. No electronic gadgets, but we had super balls, and boy could those things bounce. They could also get you in trouble if you did not put them away when recess was over, as I found out. My super ball was taken away by my teacher who told me I would get it back at the end of the school year. A few weeks later she had left the room for a few minutes. In front of the whole class I went to her desk, opened the drawer, and took back my super ball. No one really liked the teacher so no one told on me. She never said a word about it being gone so I got by with that one. If only I had been so lucky with every thing else I did in my life that was stupid.
