Kids Without Cloths

To Take Pictures Or Not

sisters in bath Wal-Mart is being sued again, does it ever end for that company?  This time it is about pictures of kids without cloths.

It seems some parents decided to photograph their kids in the bath tub and take the film to Wal-Mart for developing.  The employee developing the photos felt that the pictures were not only inappropriate, but might be breaking a law or two.  Wal-Mart employees have the right to refuse to develop anything they determine is in bad taste, usually nude photos.  In this case the employee thought it would be best to call the police and see if it needed to be looked into.  I don't feel at this point that the employee has done anything wrong.  When in doubt they turn to the police for another opinion, letting them decide what needs to be done.

The police felt there was enough going on in these photos to alert the child protective services.  The kids were removed from the home the same day, and stayed away for nine months.  The home was searched and the parents required to take special classes and jump through numerous hoops in order to get their kids back.

These parents are now suing Wal-Mart for their mental grieve.  On the surface it sounds like they certainly have the right to go get them.  Or do they?  More details into the case reveal that the employee saw more, in his or her opinion, than an innocent bathtub picture.  It sounds to me like asking the police for advice was the right thing to do.  The police obviously felt the photos were anything but innocent as they called CPS.  Child Protective Services, upon visiting with the kids and searching the house, felt they had sufficient grounds to take the kids.  Although we do not have all of the details, the photos at Wal-Mart were just a small sample of what was to be found at the home.

young girls at bath time We all have our own feelings about when and how to teach modesty to a child.  My daughters were allowed to grow into it, as opposed to having it forced upon them, when they were to young to care or understand.  When the time came to be covered up around dad, they just knew it.  That was just my way of handling the situation, no more right or wrong than other points of view.

So, I have three little girls in a pretty liberal household.  We might shower together or go skinny dipping at times, it was just not a big deal.  Yet, I had to search long and hard for photos of my kids without cloths.  What's on this page is it folks, my collection of kids without cloths photos.  Why on earth would I ever need any more?  What would be the point?  Do kids really want to grow up and find the family photo album full of pictures of them in the nude?  I'm not saying it is wrong, dirty, bad or disgusting to take a picture of a child running around naked, as kids do, I'm saying what's the point?

I certainly don't think you should ever photograph kids in a way that you would be ashamed to take them to Wal-Mart for enlarging, or what-ever.  In this day and age, parents need to think.  Think, not only about what is truly right and wrong, but think about the way you will be perceived by others.  How you are perceived by others is sometimes all that matters.  So next time you are in the presence of kids without cloths, think long and hard about whether or not it's a Kodak moment.
