Are you part of one of the new green schools in Wyoming? Are you
working with an existing school to make it greener? Green schools teach
important lessons to our children and they can be new structures or existing
ones. The new green schools can act as role models for other schools to
study and learn from. The sooner all the schools in Wyoming teach our
children about sustainable living and energy conservation the better. We
would love to hear what you are doing to green a school in your part of Wyoming.
Greybull Elementary School is the first LEED certified school in the state with two others following close behind. The Davy Jackson School and the Rafter J. Day Care Center hope to be LEED certified also.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and a part of the U.S. Green Building Council. To be certified by them means scoring high across a long list of criteria. Some of these features that are incorporated in the Greybull School are the use of building materials purchased from local suppliers. Water conservation was handled by special fixtures in the bathrooms and cafeteria. Energy conservation comes from a well insulated building and geothermal heating and cooling.
Natural light is an important consideration with all green schools and Greybull Elementary was able to light 85% of it's interior space with it. Combine the use of natural light and high efficiency lighting systems and the monthly electric bill stays very low.
Green schools need to be teaching tools as well as healthy learning environments. This school will recycle metal, glass, plastic and paper as well as being a community drop off for recycled items. Many of the buildings features are exposed and labeled for so students can see first hand what makes a green school tick.
While all schools may not be flooded with natural light they can all do some of the things that make a school green. All schools can use eco-friendly cleaning products and serve organically grown food in the cafeteria. They can separate the waste into compost, recycle and trash. They can promote walking and bike riding for students and teachers. The list goes on and on, it just becomes a matter of getting started. The community benefits and our children benefit. These are things they need to be learning.
What are you doing to green a school in Wyoming? Share what you do and maybe we can get the whole state involved in a green school or two.
