Are you involved with a green school in Washington? If so, could you
take a moment and tell us about it? It would be great to create enough
interest in this to turn all the schools in Washington green.
Green schools can be schools that teach energy conservation and sustainable living just like they can be newly constructed green schools. Both types of green schools are growing in popularity all over the country. It is such an important issue, I hope all parents are making their voices heard in favor of this trend. Healthier environments are being built and curriculums are including important life lessons about recycling and using energy wisely.
One of the newly constructed green schools in Washington is Bertschi School. This Seattle school features a roof full of solar panels to reduce the monthly utility bill. This school is a LEED gold certified building meaning it is at the top of green standards. One of the qualifications for LEED is the incorporation of the building into the curriculum of the school. At Bertschi there are interactive signs all around the school at the different facility systems. One of the signs is permanent information about the system and the other can be changed by the student in charge. The student in charge of water may make a note that the cistern is only half full. The cistern holds water used for the vegetable garden and the toilets so my guess is they would be having rain dances if this were to get to low.
This school was also able to take the future students through the building as it was being built. That let them see some of the earth friendly building strategies first hand. They were able to see how over half of the school construction waste was recycled instead of sent to a landfill. They were also able to see products being used that were made from recycled material. This school was a learning tool during construction and will continue to be one for many years to come.
What are you doing to green a school in Washington? Tell us what your school is doing to teach sustainable living and how the students are experiencing it by actively doing activities and projects. The more we talk about this topic the more parents, teachers and students will join in.
