What are you doing to help a green school in Virginia? We would love to
hear about all the green schools in Virginia and what you are doing to make them
that way. The more we talk about it the more people we can get interested
and hopefully involved.
Sustainable living and energy conservation are some of the most important lessons we can teach our children and learning by doing is one of the best ways to teach it. That's why all schools need green clubs where the kids can get hands on experience learning valuable skills.
Newly constructed schools are being built green all over Virginia. These schools are built environmentally friendly and they save energy costs for their owners. They are also part of the class curriculum in most cases. Green schools are excellent, healthy learning environments for our children and it is exciting to see so many being built around the country. Some of the new green schools in Virginia are Episcopal High School, Hermitage Elementary School, John M. Langston High School, Kersey Creek Elementary School, Peabody School - addition and T.C. Williams High School.
T.C. Williams High School is an excellent example of a state of the art green school. It is a LEED gold school. One of the green features at this school is the four hundred and fifty thousand gallon water containment where rain water is collected and used for toilet flushing, a/c functions and green space irrigation. Water conservation is just one of the areas looked at in LEED certification, another is energy efficiency. Most green schools have solar electric and geothermal heat.
The LEED guidelines also look closely at how much of the building material used in the construction of the school was recycled and how much was sent to a landfill. The building materials themselves are looked at with higher scores going to "green products". These are products that have a certain percentage of recycled material in them and products produced locally.
Green schools not only teach our students but they also teach other schools and school districts. So much of what they do can be done at your school to help it go green. All schools can have a compost bin, use recycle containers, have changing rooms for walkers, bikers and joggers, install solar panels and have green clubs.
