We here a lot about the green schools being built but existing schools can go green also. Teaching our children about sustainability and energy efficiency are vital lessons they need to be learning. Involving kids in green activities is one of the best ways of teaching it, and the greener the school, the more these lessons being taught.
Vermont has a couple of green schools that can be looked at as models of energy conservation. The Putney school in southern Vermont built the nations first net-zero secondary school building. It is a field house and makes a very loud statement to the rest of the world, net-zero is possible and very do-able. Net zero means the building creates as much energy as it uses. This building will create more electricity than it uses during the summer months and sell this power back to the grid. During the winter it will need to buy the power back for heat, but overall it will break even. The Putney School is dedicated to progressive education and teaching sustainability to our children.
Another notable green school building in Vermont is the Debevoise Hall at the Vermont Law School. This was primarily a renovation project done to meet LEED silver standard. There are many green aspects that stand out in this building, one of them being the composting toilets. These things microbial action to take care of business and use less water than traditional models.
With so many green schools being built, and so many existing ones going green, it just makes sense to get your school involved. One way of doing this is to start a green club. When you get the kids active it is amazing what they can do. Green clubs have been instrumental in school and community green projects all across the country. Does your school have one? Does your school recycle? Does your school have a compost bin and an organic garden?
Let us know how you are part of a green school in Vermont. Let's get everyone involved, it's good for the kids and good for the earth.
