Green Schools In Texas

red notebook There are a lot of green schools in Texas, are you involved with one of them?  We would sure like to hear about your experience, either as a parent, teacher or student.  Green schools are being built in Texas and older schools are turning green.  It's time for all of us parents to be active in teaching sustainable living and alternative energy.

Newly constructed schools are being built to meet LEED standards on a regular basis across the country.  Many cities require all new schools to meet these standards.  The results are schools that are healthier for our children, they are excellent teaching tools for teaching energy conservation and they save the school districts thousands each month in utility bills.

Texas has been very active in building green schools.  You may recognize some of these names.  Emerson Unitarian Church Educational Building in Houston, Hector Garcia Middle School in Dallas, St. Catherines Montessori School in Houston, St. Mark's School of Texas in Dallas, Thompson Elementary Replacement School in Houston, Walnut Bend Elementary School in Houston and West Brazos Junior High School in Brazoria are all LEED certified Schools.

Some of the things you will find in common with all these schools are an abundance of natural light, solar electricity, rainwater containment, low-flow water fixtures and light sensors for automatically adjusting artificial lights.  These are just a few of the LEED requirements that would apply to most of these schools.

There are also things you would not be able to see like the school curriculum including sustainable living and energy conservation.  You would probably not be aware that the majority of waste created by the school was recycled instead of being sent to a landfill.  And you may not notice the drywall is made with recycled material or that the paint is environmentally friendly.

Green schools have so much to offer and there is so much that can be done to existing schools to green them up.  There is plenty of work to do trying to get all the schools in Texas green, but we can do it.  What are you doing to help green the schools in Texas?
