Green schools are being built all over the country. Existing schools
are turning green at an even faster pace. Are you working with a green
school in Tennessee? Do you have a minute to tell us what you are doing
and if others could do the same at their school? Greening our schools is
an important mission because it is teaching our children valuable lessons about
sustainable living and energy conservation.
Greening of existing schools is happening in so many different ways. Some schools are working on recycling programs while others are installing solar panels. Green clubs are getting started and green challenges and competitions are becoming commonplace. The ways to go green are endless, sometimes the hard part is just getting started.
Green school construction is usually done with LEED standards in mind. LEED is the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, a part of the U.S. Green Building Council. In the state of Tennessee Vanderbilt University is leading the way in LEED certified buildings. The Commons area has the distinction of having the most green building in one place with seven.
Many states, towns and school districts are writing codes that say all new school construction will meet LEED standards. That means there will be a lot more green schools in Tennessee, and all over the country. Since meeting these strict standards means a healthier environment for our kids to call their second home I am all for it. The cities and school districts that have built these schools are liking them also because the utility bills are only a fraction of a standard school.
So whether you are greening an existing school are participating at a new green building we would all benefit from hearing your experience. What are you doing to green a school in Tennessee?
A green school, club or activity you are proud of.
