Green Schools In Rhode Island

ruler and compas What are the green schools in Rhode Island doing this year?  Are you involved in teaching our children about sustainability and energy conservation?  If you are a part of the great learning process we would love to hear what you are doing.  Teaching these lessons to our children is so important, maybe you could help by sharing your experience with a greens school.

An excellent example of a green school is Roger Williams University in Bristol.  Anyone in Rhode Island looking to make green changes at there school should look here for ideas.  For starters, RWU is one of about six hundred other schools that are part of the Climate Commitment.  This is a challenge for schools to create a plan to lower carbon emissions.  Efforts so far include using a biodiesel fueled shuttle and an aggressive compositing policy.

In Law School Bistro trash containers come in threes.  One for trash, one for recycle and one for compost.  Each container is labeled to make it clear what goes where.  This is a simple matter that all schools should be doing.

Roger Williams University has a policy where all new construction must be done to LEED standards.  LEED is short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a part of the U.S. Green Building Council.  Using these standards result in healthier buildings with minimal carbon footprints.

Some of the green building techniques used on these buildings has, or will be, the use of CFC free air conditioning, low flow plumbing fixtures, low impact "green" building materials, motion detector lighting and a monitor screen showing a buildings current energy consumption.  The use of natural light is often the first thing noticed in green buildings, the more the better for a healthier environment.

One of the best ways I know of to turn a school green is to start a green club and turn the kids loose, with a little guidance.  Green clubs have been doing some amazing things across the country and if your school does not have one, maybe it's time it does.
