Have you been working to green a school in Oregon? Schools are going
green all over the country, are you involved, if not, maybe it's time to get
that way.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is part of the U.S. Green Building Council. They give awards to qualifying schools that are up to par with their strict standards. Currently Oregon has eight of these LEED certified schools and that's a real good start. It shows the country the high importance Oregon puts on the environment and on education.
One of these green schools is Rosa Parks School. This school is mixed-use building and will serve the North Portland area. It is a public-private partnership that will include a K-6 school, a Boys and Girls Club and Portland Parks and Community Center. Many green schools are multi purpose buildings making better use of the investment dollar.
Some of the green features of this school are the use of natural daylight, storm water management where all rainwater is kept on the premises, photovoltaic solar panels and displacement ventilation.
Other LEED green schools in Oregon include Beaverton High School, Bob and Pat Straub Environmental Learning, Clackamas High School, Holy Redeemer Catholic School and McMinnville - Sue Buel Elementary.
Schools are being built green in Oregon and they are going green in Oregon. Every school should have a green club and every school should teach energy conservation and sustainable living. It's important for all children to learn this, not just those attending "green" schools.
