Green Schools In North Carolina

atlas at school Are you involved with one of the LEED certified green schools in North Carolina?  We would love to hear your experience with these schools.  We would also like to hear how you are turning any school in green.  Green schools are being built all over the country just as existing schools are going green.

In Chapel Hill is one of the nicest environmentally friendly schools in North Carolina.  LEED is the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design portion of the U.S. Green Building Council.  For schools to be recognized into this program they must pass many levels of sustainability and energy conservation.

The Carrboro High School has passed the LEED criteria and the Policy Code 9040, High Performance Building Design Criteria.  This is another way of saying this school is tops in energy conservation, water reduction, high efficiency lighting and improved indoor air quality.

A few of the many things that make this school environmentally friendly are the one hundred thousand gallon tank that collects rainwater, hot water provided by solar panels, a highly reflective roof surface, a bus stop and shelter and plenty of natural light.

Green schools are not only energy saving, environmentally friendly, buildings they are learning tools.  The school becomes part of the curriculum where energy efficiency is taught to our children in ways they can see, touch and understand.  This type of learning experience should not be limited to just the students attending "green" schools.  Turn your school green, and let us know how you did it.  Tell us all about green schools in North Carolina.  Others just might do the same.
