alphabet on blackboard What are you doing to green a school in New Hampshire.  We would love to hear from you.  You can tell us about your experience as a call out for more help or as a suggestion for what others could do at their school.  Greening the schools in New Hampshire is important, are you doing your part.

Sustainable living and energy conservation can be taught both in and out of the classroom and the ideas are almost endless.  You could have a recycle competition, calculate every ones carbon footprint, start a compost heap and a garden or take a green field trip.

Teachers can teach by example in so many ways in the classroom, and involve the students at the same time.  Have organic snacks and discuss the importance of buying local, plant a tree on earth day or any other day and turn off the computers when not in use.  Teach by example by walking, biking or carpooling to school.  Other little things the kids will notice include using a reusable glass or mug, use recycled pencils and recharge batteries.  It's all these little things the kids will pick up on.

It is my feeling that all schools should have a green club.  One of the first club activities might be to teach proper waste disposal in the lunch room.  Teach the whole school what gets composted, recycled or put in the garbage.  Put the compost to good use in the school garden and around the school fruit trees.  Use harvested rain water for these trees and gardens.

One green club obtained a donation of reusable grocery bags and spent the weekend handing them out at a local market.  Another club had a shoe drive and rounded up every unused shoe in town.  They were then either donated to the Salvation Army or sent to the Nike recycle program.  The green club stories go on and on, about kids going out into their communities and making a difference.
