What are you doing to green the schools in Nebraska? Are you teaching
sustainable living to a classroom of kids? Are you a parent working with
the school board to bring things like recycling and organic gardening to your
child's school? Are you a student involved in an active green club where
you go out into the community and make a difference? Further down the page
is a place where you can tell us exactly how you are greening a school in
Nebraska.
Green schools are being built all over the country and existing schools are turning green also. Local governments in Kansas have been looking very closely at LEED certified green schools in nearby states and noticing the healthier environments and the large savings being seen in utility bills. The state really is watching and learning but don't let that stop you from getting into the action and making green things happen.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln takes energy conservation and sustainability very seriously. All new construction products will be LEED certified. This should be standard operating procedure for the entire state. The food served on campus feature locally and sustainably grown produce, again something all schools should be doing. They are also using vehicles fueled by soy bio-diesel and gasohol for school business.
All schools can go green and sometimes it takes the parents, teachers and students to make it happen. Green clubs around the country have done some pretty amazing things. Solar systems have been installed. Recycle containers have been scattered all over schools where there were none before, because the students went out into the community and worked for them. Students have worked in the cafeterias to teach the difference between waste, recycle and compost. Gardens and trees have been planted, roads have been adopted and bike racks installed. Kids have pushed for changing rooms to encourage walking, biking or jogging to school instead of driving.
What are you doing to green a school in Nebraska? Let us know and maybe we can get the whole state active. Green schools are catching on but not fast enough, we need more help.
A green school, club or activity you are proud of.
