Greening a school takes time and effort on the part of students, teachers and parents, but it is well worth it. The school becomes a healthier, more sustainable place, and the students learn important life lessons. These lessons are the ones they can take with them and use every day for the rest of their lives.
Students across the country are doing some very green things these days. One student helped build a bio-diesel fuel plant at the school while another lead a gardening project. Teachers get involved also by teaching sustainability in and out of the classroom. From restoring nearby natural habitat to starting a school compost bin many teachers are getting active with their students.
Schools are getting active also with many different projects and contests. Projects like composting, recycling, donating unused food and other items can easily involve an entire school. Recycling drives can turn into a friendly competition between classes.
Every school should have a green club of some sort. These clubs teach kids to go out into the community and teach others how to protect the earth and our natural resources. One club hands out reusable bags at grocery stores while another rounded up every unused shoe in the town for proper disposal. The ways a group of children, or young adults, can make a difference in a community is endless. Even if you do nothing more than adopt a highway and clean it once a month, you are doing something.
