Are you working with a green school in Missouri, either as a teacher, parent
or student? Turning a school green can be a valuable lesson for any child,
just to be a part of such an important activity.
Green schools can either refer to the building structure itself or to the teaching curriculum, sustainable living activities and energy conservation involvement. Some of the new green schools being built around the country are very amazing structures. The combination of natural light and clean air make them healthier than a normal school. The use of green building materials help also. Green structures also save the school districts money with the use of alternative energy, from solar to geo-thermal, it is all getting used.
Kansas City is home to Missouri's first green certified school. Staley High School is an LEED Silver school and that means it was graded very high for energy efficiency and sustainable building practices. Staley features excellent use of green space with three ponds spread around 48 acres. This green space was developed making use of existing wetlands and incorporating teaching tools throughout. Many classes and other activities take place out of doors, the way it should be.
To save energy this school went with a geo-thermal system for heating and cooling the buildings. This amounts to about a forty two percent savings over a conventional system. It has been calculated that this school will be paying back to the community, in the way of energy savings, in less than ten years. Certainly a lesson we hope the rest of Missouri takes a good look at.
Other concerns for a LEED certificate are the use of green materials in the construction process and the matter in which the left over material is disposed of. The more material that gets recycled, the higher the score. The school curriculum is even looked at in this school rating system, sustainable living will be taught and the school will be used as a teaching tool.
Many towns are now requiring all newly constructed schools to be LEED certified schools because of the many benefits. LEED stand for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and there really is something to it. It is being proven all over the country.
