Green Schools In Mississippi

pen and paper Are you presently working with a green school in Mississippi?  If you have school aged children this should be a concern.  Green schools create healthier environments leading to less sick days and higher test scores.  Many cities across the nation are insisting that all newly constructed schools be LEED certified green schools.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a part of the U.S. Green Building Council.  The first state funded certified building in Mississippi is located at Jackson State University.  The School Of Engineering used green building standards in it's construction and is hoping to be a leader to all the Mississippi schools to follow.

Schools are looked at in many different areas of energy conservation and sustainability.  Water conservation is one of those areas of interest and harvesting and making use of rainwater is an important consideration.  The School of Engineering makes use of it's rain water to feed their irrigation system.  The water is captured in underwater containment containers and saves it for when it is needed.

Good use of natural light is another aspect all green schools have in common, as are light sensors for adjusting light strength as well as turning them on and off.  Natural light is considered from the beginnings of the design with what is called the building orientation.  The combination of orientation and window size and placement allow for the classrooms and labs at this school to be well lit with a minimal use of artificial light.

Many of the qualities looked at for LEED certification can be adapted to existing schools.  The use of alternative energy can be added to schools at any time.  Solar panels can be added to schools to create excellent learning tools as well as reduce the schools use of fossil fuels.  Transportation is another area schools can improve on by having plenty of bike racks, a changing room for bike riders or joggers, prime parking for electric or hybrid cars and making sure at least one form of public transportation stops near the school.

Recycling is important and can be used at any school.  Get the whole school involved in sorting it's trash into compost, recycle and landfill stuff.  This is a fun learning experience for teachers, students and parents.

What are you doing to green a school in Mississippi?  Are you teaching sustainable living, part of a green club, working with a school board for green improvements?  Let us know, we can spread the word and maybe involve others.
