According to the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design program there are several green schools in Michigan. One of
them is the Detroit School of Arts. This school is part of the Detroit
Public School system and has been in operation since 2005.
Some of the green aspects of this school involve the use of natural light and the use of green products in the construction. Rooms where more light is needed are located on the perimeter of the building where there is an abundance of natural light. Rooms with less need for light are in the center areas.
Green building materials are looked at in several different ways. One way is how much was produced locally. Another is the use of recycled materials in the manufacturing of the materials. Construction site waste is also considered. This site was able to recycle nearly sixty percent of it's waste, keeping it out of landfills.
Another environmental concern in the rating program concerns transportation. How will the students and teachers get to the school? This school is located near public transportation and also has a changing area for those that wish to jog or bike to school.
By taking the time to look closely at the certified green schools in your area you will be able to formulate ideas that would work in your school. All schools can recycle, grow gardens, encourage bike riding, install solar panels and divert rain water to green areas. Schools can also have green clubs and teach sustainability in the classroom and on field trips.
Are you working with a green school in Michigan? Either as a student, a teacher or a parent, we would love to know what your school is doing to help the environment, and to help our children learn about sustainability and energy conservation.
A green school, club or activity you are proud of.
