Green Schools In Massachusetts

Child's earth drawing Do you have the pleasure of working with, or attending, a green school?  More schools are going green every day.  They are either being built green or they are introducing green into the curriculum with classes, clubs and activities.  We would love to hear about your green school in Massachusetts.

At last count Massachusetts was one of the nations leaders in LEED certified green schools.  They have taken a serious stance in the building of environmentally friendly and energy conserving schools.  The first green school in Massachusetts was William F. Stanley Elementary School in Waltham.  It is a LEED certified silver school and is a second home to over five hundred lucky kids.

This school features many energy and environmental elements not found in more traditional buildings.  Natural lighting is an important aspect as are the photo sensors and dimmable lights.  The solar panels are mounted on some of the walls, on the roof and on the media center canopy.  Other green touches include low VOC paints and Green Seal carpet.

Building a green school is not the only way to give are children the benefit of learning sustainable living.  In my opinion every school should have a green club.  Every school should have a recycle program with appropriate containers located in convenient places.  A compost bin and garden are excellent class activities, stuff the whole school can get involved in.  A lunch room should teach what goes in trash, what goes in recycle and what can be composted.  These are important lessons our kids need to learn.

Are you involved with a green school?  We would love to hear about what you are doing.  Maybe others can be encouraged to help green the schools in Massachusetts.
