Green Schools In Kentucky

students Are you part of a green school in Kentucky?  They are being built everywhere, but just because your school is not one of the newly built "green schools" does not mean it can't teach sustainable living and every conservation.  Parents, teachers and students can all work together to make this happen.  We would love to hear about your green school efforts in Kentucky.

The first school in Kentucky to be certified a LEED school is the Twenhofel Middle School in Independence.  This is one of those schools where the building is part of the curriculum.  The lessons start as soon as the kids get to school and check the TV screen.  Here they can learn the days "vital signs".  These are generated from the schools computer system and can tell the students things like the level of the rainwater collection system or the amount of money the solar system saved on energy costs the day before.  These vital signs screens are used in the class lessons whenever they apply to the subject matter.

Natural light is an important factor in a green school and Twenhofel has plenty of that.  The light levels in every room are electronically monitored and supplemented with artificial light only when needed.  Another green aspect of this school is the use of geothermal heat pump system.

Green schools have been noted for having less absenteeism and higher test scores, meaning the kids are healthier and learn more.  It only sounds reasonable to me, teach the kids in a healthier environment and they will learn better.  A healthier environment can be created in any school, it just takes more people getting involved and making changes.  Are you doing green work, as a student, parent or teacher in your local school?  Are you part of a green school in Kentucky?
