Green Schools In Kansas
Are you involved with a green school in Kansas? Schools should all be
green, whether in a new LEED certified structure or an older school where
sustainability is embraced by faculty, students and parents.
In Olathe Kansas, Woodland Elementary becomes the first school in the state certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This is a program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Schools can be either gold, silver or certificate. Woodland received a silver meaning it scored fairly high in all the different criteria.
A few of the things looked at by the LEED experts is how well the school uses natural light, how energy efficient the school is and how clean air issues have been dealt with. They also look at recycling attributes of the building. Another consideration is water, water conservation and rain water use.
Many of the features of green schools can be retro-fitted into existing structures, it just takes money and something thinking it is important enough. High school students have raised funds for and installed solar panels. Other students have worked with the local waste company to have recycle containers donated to the school.
Sustainability needs to be taught in our schools and our children need to be able to learn these lessons in the school and in the community. Get the school boards involved and get the students involved. Your community needs all of you working together.
