Green Schools In Iowa

stack of books Are the schools going green in Iowa?  Yes they are, a little at a time, but it is happening.  Are you involved with a green school in Iowa?  We would love to here your experience.  Did you start a green project or maybe a green club.  Schools are going green in many different ways and sharing your story might get others motivated to do the same.

One way schools are going green is by building green structures.  Another way is by rebuilding old structures in a green way.  Willowwind School in Iowa City is one of those schools.  It is the first private school in Iowa to receive to be a certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) school and it went silver, that's quite an accomplishment considering they started with a broken down Moose Lodge.

This school features loads of natural light through the high tech skylights.  Extra care is also given to air quality, water and energy conservation and the use of green outdoor space.  This school has Montessori type classrooms and my guess is it is an incredible learning environment.

Green schools are more than just a green structure.  We need to be teaching sustainability and energy conservation to children of all ages.  Make sure you school has a green team, a group willing to work on environmental issues.  This group can be teachers, parents or students, or best, a combination of all.

A green team can create a students club, they can work with the community for help with things like solar panels and recycle containers.  Group members can be present at school board meetings and town meetings to work green initiatives.  It is important to provide a healthy learning environment and it is equally important to teach sustainability in the classroom.
