Are you involved in any of the many green schools in Indiana? The
Indianapolis Public School district has taken the matter of green school very
seriously. They have taken on the task of upgrading 25 schools over a five
year period. They have also decided to seek LEED certification for all of
these projects. They estimate that at any one time there will be eight
schools in some sort of construction stage.
These schools will be closely watched by at least fifteen surrounding school districts who will hopefully be doing the same soon. It has already been proven that green schools provide a healthier environment for the students and teachers. This healthier environment results in teachers teaching better and children learning more. The increased test scores are proof of that.
If your child has the opportunity to attend a green school, I would sure recommend it. If not, turn the existing school green. It is amazing what motivated teachers, parents and students are doing in all parts of the country. They are turning their schools green one project at a time. Students have raised money for and purchased solar panels. They have planted gardens, purchased recycle containers and started green clubs. Club members have been known to stand in front of grocery stores handing out reusable bags. They have participated in collecting used shoes for proper recycling. They have collected cell phones to be donated to organizations that make them available to special needs people. The list goes on and on.
So don't wait for a green building, unless you are fortunate to have one, turn your existing school green. What is your school doing to promote sustainability and energy efficiency? We would love to hear about your experiences with green schools in Indiana..
