Are your children attending a green school in Illinois? If not, maybe
they will be soon. There are currently six LEED certified green schools in
Illinois with more in the planning stages. Chicago now requires all new
public schools to be LEED certified schools. Even the private schools are
getting involved like the two school renovation projects by the United
Neighborhood Organization.
Bolingbrook High School in the Valley View Community Unit School District was the first LEED certified school in Illinois. It is also noteworthy that it was just the third high school certified in the United States. Located in the town of Bolingbrook it sits on seventy acres of land and is designed to hold up to three thousand six hundred students.
This school features many of the usual things we have come to expect with green schools, as in the automatic control sensors for heating, cooling and lighting. Another objective a school needs to meet to be certified is the use of building material containing recycled content. Some of the components on this list are the structural steel, carpet, other flooring, tile and ceiling panels.
As usual with green schools, Bolingbrook High School makes use of natural daylight and plenty of outdoor green space. Because of the emphasis put on natural light, green space and clean air, green schools are said to be much healthier learning environments for our children.
