Green Schools In Hawaii

Are there green schools in Hawaii?  Are you involved in a green School?  There are several factors to consider when determining if a school is green or not.  The structure can be green and so can the curriculum.  The students can also make a school green with an active green club.

In Hawaii, the Case Middle School is a LEED gold school, a very high recognition, one they should be proud of.  In order to qualify for such a high honor many aspects of sustainability and energy efficiency need to be dealt with.  This school uses sensors on the A/C units so they shut off if the windows are opened.  Sensors are also used on the lights, they go off when a room is empty and the brightness adjusts for the amount of natural light entering the room.

I find the air conditioning units to be the most interesting part of the school.  There are three ice making plants, one for each section of the school.  These plants make ice at night when the electricity is the cheapest and the melting ice during the day is used to cool the school.

We would love to hear about your experience with green schools.  Whether you are a teacher, student or parent, if you have a green school story, please share.
