What's up with these green schools in Connecticut? Green Schools are the in thing. They are being built all over the place and the results are all positive. Green Schools are creating a healthier environment to teach and learn and are saving money and energy at the same time. We would love to hear about your involvement with green schools in Connecticut, either from the viewpoint of a teacher, student or parent.
One green school is making news for not only being a a green building but teaching a green curriculum. At Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School in New Haven every day is green day. Most everything that takes place at this school is with the environment in mind, from putting their meal scraps in the composting bin to involving the environment in math class.
The school is pre-school though sixth grade, about 325 of them. These kids have all shown an interest in working with and helping the environment, that is the prerequisite for getting into this green school. The students at this school are learning to be good environmental role models, lessons that will stay with them their entire lives.
As teachers and parents become more aware of the need to be teaching sustainability in the classroom, more opportunities are being made available to them for making the whole thing fun and interesting. Taking green out of the classroom and into the community is critical. Get the kids involved in the environment and in the community as early and as often as possible.
