Have you heard about green schools in Colorado? Pressure is being applied to states to build green schools and Colorado is gearing up to take on the challenge. The Colorado Green Schools Initiative is part of the Colorado's chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. Their goal is to green Colorado's schools within a generation.
Green schools have so many benefits for the community, the teachers and the parents. The energy savings is huge allowing more money to be used in more productive ways. Students learn more in healthier environments, a proven fact backed by a lot of testing. Green Schools are healthier because of better lighting, temperature control, improved ventilation and a much higher standard of air quality.
One such school in Colorado is the Fossil Ridge High School. It is an LEED certified school and is said to be saving about a hundred thousand dollars a year in electric bills because of it's use of solar electricity.
Green schools are not just newly constructed ones, many older buildings are being changed to a more sustainable condition with the addition of solar electric and outdoor green spaces. Ridding the school of toxic cleaning agents is another way schools are going green. Teaching sustainability and energy conservation in the classroom is another and one of my favorites is the raising popularity of green clubs.
Are you involved in a green school in Colorado. We would enjoy hearing about it and learning what you doing to green your part of the state while teaching children important life lessons.
A green school, club or activity you are proud of.
