Financial Aid

Financing A College Education

Most college students rely on at least one form of financial aid or another.  If your child has shown, by doing well in high school, a sincere desire to further his or her education, help is available.

Financial assistance for college may come in many different forms.  There are scholarships, federal student loans and grants, fellowships, wealthy family member contributions and many more.  The most common are the Stafford and Perkins student loans.  The first place to start looking for college funding is the Federal Student Aid, FAFSA, web site.  Fill out the online application and get started.

Scholarships are an excellent way to help with financing a college education.  Search your community, city and state for any and all types of scholarships.  Not all scholarships are large but they do all add up.  A good essay could easily win a five hundred or a thousand dollar scholarship. Spend plenty of time on this and it does pay off.

time to save for college If you make your college plans early enough in your child's life, savings plans could be a major contributor to your college funding.  By starting as early in life as possible and establishing a solid financial plan, amazing things can happen.  Included in you financial plan should be a college saving program such as a 529 plan.  Every state offers some sort of 529 plan which allows you to save and earn money tax free.

Applying to colleges, filling out loan applications and searching for scholarships needs to be started in the junior year of high school.  Many forms of college funding go to the first qualified applicants, until the money is gone.  Money is limited in all areas of financial aid and the sooner you start looking the better.

Another very important type of financial aid is for your child to have a part time job.  A part time job, on campus or off, can be a real plus for parents.  A college student needs money for food, cloths, entertainment and plain old pocket change.  A hundred or two a month adds that much more to your college expenses and needs to be considered in your planning.

Hopefully you will find the financial aid needed to send your child to college.
