High School Graduation

Do you need some financial aid tips?  Are you graduating from high school this year and wondering about the possibilities of college?  Hopefully you have done well in school so far as this really helps.  Good grades alone can open the doors for many scholarships.

There are many more financial aid tips we can share with you to help you find the needed money to attend college.  The most important one is to start early.  Start thinking about college long before your senior year in high school.  Start taking college accredited classes as soon as possible and be looking into financial aid packages offered by some of the schools you want to apply to.

Here are some other financial aid tips aimed to help you get all the free college money possible.

  • Start talking about it and ask for help.  Don't expect your parents to take care of everything for you.  Start doing some research yourself.  You should be talking to your school counselors, your older siblings and friends and anyone else you know who has been to college.  You can also join the college chat at FAFSA.ed.gov.
  • Search the Web.  Start searching out sources of funding for the different schools you plan to attend.  Some scholarships and grants can be used at any school while some are very state and school specific.  You can learn a lot at the governments FAFSA site as well as other sites that list grants and scholarships.
  • Start writing your essays.  It's never to early to start writing a few very good essays.  These will be used when applying for many of the scholarships and grants available.  It is easy to make small changes in these essays and reuse them over and over again.
  • Get involved in school and community activities.  It's never to early to start this and it is very important.  It looks really good on your scholarship applications to be able to list a lot of clubs and local activities that you have been involved in.
  • Fill out the FAFSA application as early as possible.  Get a good jump on this form as it has a lot to do with your overall college financial picture.  Make use of the new FAFSA4caster.ed.gov site to get an early view of your financial eligibility.
  • Start applying.  When you start the process of applying for scholarships and grants apply for all you think you might qualify for.  If you are not sure apply anyway.  Many of the smaller grant programs get few applicants and you just might get it, even if you don't meet all the qualifications.  Don't hesitate to apply for 50 or more grants and scholarships.  The money is out there for those willing to do the work for it.
  • Fill in all the blanks.  When filling out the forms fill in all the blanks, whether you think they are important or not.  Give as much information as possible and have all your paperwork proofread by another person, checking for correct spelling and complete answers.
