Distance Learning
Distance Learning is becoming more and more popular with each passing year. In Arizona it's all the rage with 17,800 students currently enrolled in on-line classes.
Twenty new districts have been approved to offer online education this year and applications are being reviewed for an additional six charter school programs.
For high school students this opens up all kinds of possibilities. One of which is the ability to graduate early. Another is being able to keep a full time job while going to school. Another advantage is being able to work at your own pace, something very important to some students. All that's required is a computer with high speed internet.
Students take online classes to get ahead, and possibly graduate early, like a full year or two. Or they take classes to catch up, make up classes that have been failed, so they don't have to go to the dreaded summer school. My daughter is currently taking a credit recovery class and loves it. The same class she failed last semester she is acing this semester.
Distance learning courses are taught by certified teachers and meet state curriculum standards. Students must still pass the AIMS test to graduate. While most students use online classes in addition to their regular school classes, it is also possible to get a high school diploma taking only online classes.
Arizona has been active in online classes for the past ten years at the following districts or schools, Arizona Connections Academy, Arizona Distance Learning, Arizona Virtual Academy, Deer Valley Unified, Hope High School Online, Humanities and Sciences Academy, Lake Havasu Unified, Marana Unified, Mesa Public Schools, Peoria Unified, Pinnacle Virtual High School, Primavera Online High School, Tempe Union and Tucson Unified.
The twenty districts that have been approved to start online classes are Ajo Unified, Benson Unified, Cave Creek Unified, Chandler Unified, Chino Valley Unified, Colorado River Unified, Dysart Unified, Florence Unified, Fountain Hills Unified, Gilbert Public Schools, J.O. Combs Unified, Higley Unified, Humbolt Unified, Paradise Valley Unified, Phoenix Union Unified, Sierra Vista Unified, Santa Cruz Valley High, Prescott Unified, Vail Unified and Winslow Unified.
