Make It A Special Bond

The video above is just a feel good kind of thing, about dads and daughters, and that special bond.  It makes you smile and then leaves you with a very good feeling.  The kind of feeling you get from holding your daughter in your arms, or taking her to the park for no special reason.

Watching the video reminded me of the special bond I have always had with my girls.  A lot has been written on this site about dads and daughters, and I hope you dads out there take the time to read some of it.

baby camping I remember the time I took my three young daughters to the lake camping for a week.  Just me and my girls, one of them less than a year old.  It did not surprise anyone that I would do that, I loved being with my kids and doing things with them.  Their mom was going to be away for a week and we took advantage of our time together, just me and my girls.

You may have guessed, the photo at right is the little one on her first camping trip with dad and her big sisters.

Most of my child raising days were spent in a household where I worked all day away from home and mom took care of the kids.  When my work day was done, and I was home, we were both tired from a long days work.  I still looked forward to taking over with the kids while mom caught up on all of the things she couldn't do during the day.  If I had yard work, I had plenty of help.  If I had errands, I had company.  If the kids had friends over, they went along, the more the merrier.  The kids loved spending time away from their mom and I loved having them.

dad and daughter Spending so much of my spare time with the girls helped to establish that special bond that I wish all dads had with their daughters.  It is worth all of the time invested.

Wanting to spend time with my children was, I'm sure, a combination of reasons.  Having done my homework, read all the books, I knew it was the right thing to do.  I'm not sure that really made any difference, I loved them and wanted to be with them.  Just like my dad was with me.  My loving father, when he was home, he belonged to me. I did have to share with my sisters but I know he liked playing football with me better than anything else.

My nephews have kids, but no wives.  They are part of the growing population of parents that live apart but share the parenting responsibilities.  These guys never miss an opportunity to be with their daughters and have grown to be excellent parents.  The marriage may fall apart but the family does not have to, although it sure takes a lot of effort and desire to make things work.

Girls will always grow up loving their moms, as well they should, they will always have a special bond that no one should ever try to get between.  Dads and daughters can have something just as special, and yes, it is well worth the effort.
