College and the Rolling Stones
One of my daughters graduated from a music college. She did a five year program in four years, dual majoring in music production and music business. She flew from Boston back to Mesa Arizona for a very brief two week stay. Then she was off to California, LA area. She wanted to be the first Berklee graduate to be on the doorsteps of the major recording studios applying for a job. After her third day of interviews she had a few prospects and a tough choice. She went with a major studio because they have a history of promoting from within the company and they promised lots of overtime. Starting pay is only minimum wage so the overtime is essential for paying rent and at least eating well.
Her first assignment at this studio was to prepare a recording studio for the Rolling Stones. I am like fiftyish, or something, and raised on rock and roll. When Steph called and said "hey dad, guess what I'm doing?" the conversation went something like this. "No Way" "Yes Way" many many times before I gave in and asked for details. A couple weeks later I got a call. "Dad, you will never believe this, when I got to work this morning there ways a huge bouquet of roses and a thank you card from Keith Richards for all my help during his time at our studio".
I got a call last week. John Lennon's son is in the studio now recording and he has held the door open for Stephanie on several occasions. Playing guitar with Shawn is Paul Simon's son. Just down the hall is Korn recording their latest work. And outside, in the studio parking lot, Willie Wonka and the Chocolate factory is holding their cast party. Stephanie was the runner to bring as much chocolate back into the studio as possible on several occasions.
The Stones are now in Ontario Canada rehearsing for the upcoming tour. The CD is already getting prereleases and will hit the stores in a couple of weeks. Stephanie and I both agree it is one of their best. I would not be the least bit surprised if it was the last, or at least close to it. What a thrill for a young lady just out of college to be a part of that
During the same time frame another daughter called saying she aced her
doctoral exam. She received a prized school award in the process.
How important is it to make sure your children have the opportunity to get a college education? Let me sum it up. No amount of money or possessions could ever be equal to the pride and happiness I feel when I get these calls. Do what it takes, but get it done. You will never regret it.
Can you think of a good reason to tell a young adult to attend college? Maybe a good story about a door that was opened for someone you know because of a college education. Maybe we can inspire someone to stay in school.
