A recent study is stating college basics are sometimes better at less expensive universities, or cheap colleges. The report gives Harvard a D and Lamar University an A. Lamar runs seven thousand a year compared to Harvard's thirty eight thousand. The scores are based on the schools commitment to core subjects considered essential to a well rounded, competitive education.
The subjects considered important in this study are composition, literature, foreign language, U.S. government or history, economics, mathematics and natural or physical science. Harvard has comprehensive requirements for only two of these subjects. They are composition and science.
The nonprofit American Council of Trustees conducted the study in hopes of helping parents choose the college that will give their children the best education for their dollars spent. While the report does not tell the whole story about particular colleges, it does tell a part that might have been missing before.
The study included 714 institutions and a whopping sixty percent received a C or below. Only sixteen schools received an A. The A's included City University of New York - Brooklyn College, Baylor University, Texas A&M University, the University of Arkansas, the U.S. Military Academy, St. Thomas Aquinas and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Other studies indicate that public schools are doing a better job than private schools at offering classes where students learn basic skills and knowledge. This is done at a substantially lower price. They all seem to be lacking is some important subjects, like economics and history.
It should be interesting for parents to learn that their kids could get a good quality education at a less expensive college, possibly one in your home town. On the web site called What Will They Learn, whatwilltheylearn.com, comparisons are made for public and private schools in all fifty states. It might be worth a visit before spending your hard earned dollars. Cheap colleges just might give you the best bang for the buck.
