Teens and College

Are you both ready?

I hope you have done you home work and are well prepared for those teen years.  The teen years should be all about developing young adults and preparing them for college and beyond.  If you are looking for help with these years check my book page for teens and preteens.  This is also a good time to start doing some reading about college funding.  You may find useful information in the short articles listed below.

Have you started a savings program to help ease the financial burden of college?  The best time to do this is when your children are born, or before.  But is is never to late to start.

Most of us will be actively parenting a child through about five years of being a teenager.  These can be the most trying years of a parents life.  We want to lead our children through the perils of  drugs, sex, cell phones, negative attitudes and influences, driving and, well, the list goes on and on.  Each day can be a new adventure.

school band I raise girls so my worst nightmares are usually caused by the boys.  Those of you that raise boys, especially teenage boys, please keep them away from my little girls. (smiley face)

I do have a parenting magic tip for getting your teens off to college.  Motivate them to stay involved in school activities.  Keep them far to busy to get in trouble.  One of my daughters once told me "dad, can I go to a party tonight?  It's a band party so it's safe.  All the guys are total geeks, I guess that's part of what makes it so much fun.  I can just be me and fit in just fine.  It's at John's house and his mom is the official band mom.  She bakes all this stuff for us and makes us all feel so much at home."  Sounds like a pretty good crowd to me.  Or how about this one, another daughter loved hanging out with the speech and debate club.  Some of the guys would come over and watch movies, then do character impersonations.  Sure, they might have been a little geeky, but I sure loved having them come around.  I also felt very comfortable with my daughter having them for friends.  (note to dads with daughters - geeks are your best friends, learn to love them)

So, what makes a geek a geek, and what do they have to do with teens and college?  The geeks that hung around my house were simply teenagers that had passions for learning.  They had a strong desire to get good grades, to attend college, to graduate and pursue their dreams.  Yes, they already had dreams, they knew who they were, what they loved doing and what they wanted to do with their lives.  These "geeks" were a positive influence on my daughters and turned out to be some of the best friends a kid could have.

Does your teen have problems that concern you?  Maybe a good book would help.
